Domestic Violence 101

COURSE DESCRIPTION

DV 101 offers an introduction to the underlying root causes of violence against women. We will define and discuss sexism and misogyny & explore the history of the movement to end violence against women.  Looking broadly at the types & general dynamics of violence against women, we will learn about domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and sexual assault. Then we will hone in on domestic violence specifically & discuss the role of an advocate in supporting survivors of abuse.

OBJECTIVES

  • Learn about the history & root causes of violence against women.
  • Explore gender roles, sexism, patriarchy & misogyny in relation to violence against women.
  • Discuss the importance of prevention & social change.
  • Define domestic violence & understand both types and dynamics.
  • Define advocacy & discuss the role of advocate.
